1.  Documents Required to Apply for NRI PAN Card

As a Non-Resident Indian (NRI), obtaining a Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is essential if you wish to conduct financial transactions in India. A PAN card is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identification number issued by the Indian Income Tax Department. It serves as proof of identity and is required for various financial activities, such as opening a bank account, investing in India, or filing income tax returns. 1. Identity Proof

One of the primary documents required to apply for an NRI PAN card is an identity proof. The following documents are acceptable:

  • Copy of the passport
  • Copy of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card
  • Copy of the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card
  • Copy of the foreign bank account statement

2. Address Proof

Another important document needed for the NRI PAN card application is an address proof. The following documents are accepted:

  • Copy of the passport
  • Copy of the OCI card
  • Copy of the PIO card
  • Copy of the foreign bank account statement
  • Copy of the utility bill (electricity, water, or gas bill)
  • Copy of the driving license

3. Proof of Date of Birth

You will also need to provide proof of your date of birth. The following documents are accepted:

  • Copy of the passport
  • Copy of the birth certificate
  • Copy of the OCI card
  • Copy of the PIO card

4. Passport-sized Photographs

When applying for an NRI PAN card, you will need to provide two recent passport-sized photographs. The photographs should be clear, with a white background, and should not be older than three months.

5. Proof of NRI Status

As an NRI, you will also need to provide proof of your NRI status. The following documents are accepted:

  • Copy of the passport
  • Copy of the OCI card
  • Copy of the PIO card
  • Copy of the foreign bank account statement
  • Copy of the employment contract
  • Copy of the work permit

6. Declaration Form

Lastly, you will need to fill out and sign a declaration form. The form can be downloaded from the official website of the Indian Income Tax Department. The declaration form should be filled out accurately and signed by the applicant.

2.  Procedure for NRIs to Apply for a PAN

You can apply for an NRI PAN card online or by post.

To apply online:

  1. Go to the Income Tax Department website.
  2. Click on the “Online PAN Application” tab.
  3. Select “NRI PAN Card” from the dropdown menu.
  4. Fill out the online form and upload the required documents.
  5. Submit the application form and make the payment.

To apply by post:

  1. Download Form 49A from the Income Tax Department website.
  2. Fill out the form and attach the required documents.
  3. Mail the application form and documents to the Income Tax PAN Service Unit, NRI Cell, Post Box No. 122, Panaji, Goa – 403 001.

Processing time:

The processing time for NRI PAN card applications is usually 2-3 weeks.

Documents required to apply an NRI PAN

To apply for an NRI PAN card, you will need to submit the following documents:

  1. Completed PAN application form (Form 49A): This form can be downloaded from the Income Tax Department’s website or obtained from NSDL e-gov offices.
  2. Two recent passport-sized photographs: The photographs should be self-attested and signed.
  3. Copy of passport: The copy should be self-attested and signed.
  4. Overseas address proof: This can be a copy of your overseas bank statement, utility bill, or rental agreement. The document must be self-attested and signed.
  5. Proof of NRI status: This can be a copy of your PIO card, OCI card, or NRI certificate. The document must be self-attested and signed.
  6. Payment: The application fee for an NRI PAN card is ₹1,070. You can pay the fee online or through a demand draft.

In addition to the above documents, you may also need to submit the following documents if applicable:

  • Copy of foreign tax identification number (TIN): If you have a TIN in the country where you reside, you will need to submit a copy of it.
  • Attestation by an authorized person: If you are unable to submit the required documents yourself, you can have them attested by an authorized person. Authorized persons include Indian Embassy or High Commission officials, overseas branches of scheduled banks registered in India, or managers of NRE bank accounts.

Once you have gathered all the required documents, you can submit your PAN application online or through NSDL e-gov offices. The processing time for NRI PAN applications is typically 15-30 working days.
